“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill

More and more volunteers unselfishly do socially important work. According to some estimates, more than 100 million people worldwide are currently involved in the volunteer movement. Students, teachers and staff of DSUM also take part in volunteer movement which has immensely increased since 2014 when the University was displaced to Mariupol.

Volunteer activities in DSUM are very diverse to name a few:

  •  assistance to victims living in the “buffer zone”;

  • supporting soldiers deployed in Mariupol;

  • charitable activities for orphaned children under the guidance of student governance;

  •  eco-challenge; animal rights activists;

  • civic education through the organization of thematic locations by DSUM volunteers during major city events, such as the celebration of Europe Day, the festival “City of Professions”, the festival “From a country to Ukraine” etc.);

  • volunteering within the framework of the activities of non-governmental organizations in Mariupol, charitable foundations (Caritas Foundation Mariupol, Center for Psychosocial Adaptation) and within the framework of the activities of NGOs created by the students of DSUM “Youth of New Ukraine

  • supporting children in guardianship centers and residential homes, rehabilitation centers for children with disabilities with the active participation of future social workers and sociologists;

  • improving urban cultural space, restorating historical heritage (in cooperation with Department of humanities with the civil movement of Mariupol).

Volunteering is not only a call of the soul, it requires work on itself, constant training and self-improvement.

At the “Femida” Legal Clinic, on a voluntary basis, senior students majoring in Law  provide primary legal aid to those in need.

Students of the specialty “Social work” are actively involved in professionally oriented volunteer activities to combat domestic violence, to support the city's inclusive festivals, providing advisory services, after passing the appropriate training, practice in the information-consultation center “Contact” of Department of Sociology of Management.

At the sociological scientific research laboratory, students improve their skills as volunteer interviewers and data entry operators, encoders in order to participate in large-scale sociological surveys on a professional basis.

Volunteering is social integration without age, gender or status barriers. It is a social recognition. It's your social capital
